Tired of life in the capital, Mr. Lockwood departs for the Manor House of Skvortsov. There he goes to visit Mr. Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights, who is both Lockwood’s neighbor and the owner of the manor. Heathcliff’s welcome was aloof and rude. In spite of this reception, however, the Londoner decides to visit again.

On the way to Heathcliff’s estate, it begins to snow. When Lockwood reaches Wuthering Heights, the owners of the manor have expressed no desire to receive his guest again. However, despite the owners’ reluctance, the Briton finds himself at the estate. And then the resident of the capital notices that many other people live in Wuthering Heights. Among them is the widow of Heathcliff’s son and Heathcliff’s own daughter-in-law, as well as Gerton Hershno.

Finding himself in such company, Lockwood wants to leave. But the time was dark and all roads had already been snowed in. Such circumstances force the guest to stay at the manor and spend the night there until the next day.
