Wilhelm Meister is the son of a wealthy burgher. The young man dreams of the theater and is in love with the actress Marianne. Because of the girl’s betrayal, Wilhelm leaves with a troupe of traveling actors.

One day on the road they are attacked and Wilhelm is badly injured. He is saved by a beautiful stranger.

Recovering from his illness he departs for the Zerlo Theatre. There he meets the manager´s sister Aurelia and her son Felix. At the theater, the artists successfully stage Hamlet.

Aurelia dies and asks him to deliver a letter to her beloved Lothario. At his castle, Wilhelm is welcomed into the Tower Society and his true purpose is determined to be practical.

William learns that Felix is his son by Marianne. He is very happy. Wilhelm meets the mysterious stranger who saved him and becomes engaged to the girl.
