Harry Trench was a poor man, yet at the same time an aristocratic doctor. One day he and his companion, William Cockayne, traveled to the locality of Remagen for a glorious vacation. After a while there is their acquaintance with a rich businessman Sartorius and the daughter of the latter, whose name was Blanche. Soon Harry begins to experience love feelings towards the described representative of the fair sex. Later, the guy and the girl enter into a marital union.

After a certain period of time, Trench receives information that Sartorius earns his living by renting out residential properties located in slum areas to insolvent individuals. Such an approach disgusts the protagonist, after which the doctor and Blanche clash. They break up, but at the end of the story they decide to start their romantic relationship with a clean slate.
