Sandy, the narrator’s dog, brought a German shepherd dog into the house, who was named Batka. Batka was well-mannered, but reacted extremely aggressively to black people.

The narrator took the dog to Jack Carruthers’ kennel, Noah’s Ark. For a long time, it was impossible to retrain Batya. After Keyes, Jack’s black assistant, beat the dog and quit, Jack offered to put him to sleep.

The narrator took Batka away and contacted Keys. He promised to fix the dog.

The narrator was visited by retired Sheriff Crewshen and his grandchildren: they had lost Fido the police dog. The protagonist said he had given the dog to an African he knew.

The narrator separated from his activist wife and traveled to different countries. In the meantime, Batya escaped from the kennel and found his way home. Keyes had taught him to be afraid of black people.

Lloyd Kacelenbogen drove the narrator to Keys’ house. While the hero was looking for him, Batka attacked Lloyd and then attacked the narrator. Recognizing his former master, he ran to his house and died.
