In the middle of a bush in Australia there lived a boy, Peter, and an old man, Crooked Mick. The boy had a horse that he rode around on. One day Peter asked South Wind a question. He wanted to know where he could meet the Fair Princess. Peter could rescue her and marry her.

Wind learns from an aboriginal that there is one last princess left. She lives in the castle. The king father won’t let her go anywhere. The hero sets out to find her. South Wind gives him a bag of magic leaves. If you give such a leaf to a man, he will become kinder as he realizes that others need him and that he is loved.

The old man hands Peter the Thunderbird whip. With it, the hero will be able to call for Crooked Mick at any time. Along the way, Peter meets a kangaroo with a magic bag. The animal can get any object out of it. The hero befriends the kangaroo, and they walk together.

They walk through the Valley of the Clinging Grass. It was up to every child to cross it. In this valley the grass clung to their feet and tried to convince the children that they were no good and could do nothing.
