A story in the «Hercule Poirot» series. One evening Poirot paid a surprise visit to John Harrison. The detective said he had to investigate a murder that had not yet been committed.

Poirot noticed a hornets’ nest not far from Harrison’s house. The owner told him that his friend Claude Langton, was going to destroy it with gasoline. Poirot, on the other hand, told him that Langton had been seen in the city purchasing cyanide. Here it turns out that Harrison is engaged to a girl named Molly Dean, who was previously going to marry Langton. Poirot leaves and says he will return after Langton’s visit.

When Poirot returned, Langton had already left and Harrison was feeling fine and was surprised. It turned out that the detective had switched the poison in Harrison’s pocket for soda. John knew he was terminally ill, and Langton was having an affair with Molly again. Harrison specifically asked Langton to buy cyanide. John planned to commit suicide and make it appear that Langton had killed him so that his rival would hang.
