At her first ball, Natasha Rostova falls in love with the active and aristocratic Andrei Volkonsky. But he is married. Soon the woman dies in childbirth. Volkonsky entrusts his newborn son to the care of his father and sister.

Pierre Bezukhov, the count’s illegitimate son, receives a huge inheritance. He is immediately enmeshed in the marriage of the beautiful Hélène Kuraghina. She has many admirers and lovers.

The widowed Volkonsky falls in love with Natasha. It is decided to postpone the wedding for a year. Volkonsky goes abroad.
