The main character is Jack Andrews.

In the old days this man was a talented American actor, but during World War II his jaw was severely injured, due to which he was unable to continue furthering his career.

Jack later went to live in France on a permanent basis.

One day Mr. Andrews went with his third spouse to Rome to assist his director friend, Maurice Delaney, in making a new film. For 10 years prior to these events, Maurice had been trying to delight television audiences with his own film productions, but the expected result never came.

Upon arrival in the Italian capital, the protagonist meets a girl named Veronica, and then engages in sexual intercourse with her, which leads to a serious conflict with her boyfriend — Brisak. The latter then helped to make Mr. Delaney’s film. But the director did not want to share the glory and so kicked Brisak out of the studio while Jack returned home.
