The main characters in the piece are Corley as well as Lenehan. They were good buddies.

Many of the locals believed that Lenehan was a man who liked to live at other people’s expense. However, he was known for his eloquence and quick wit, which allowed him to avoid the stares of others. Lenehan liked to go to drinking establishments and had a way of winning people over — after a while they would invite him to sit next to them. In Joyce’s opinion, he played the role of a willing jester with a vast vocabulary. No one knew where Lenehan got his money — some said he made his money through the machinations of horse-racing betting.

One day Lenehan and Corley were walking in Rutland Square. Corley stated that he had recently met a nice girl while walking down Dame Street. He told his companion that he had lied to her about being of noble birth.
