In 1987 Joseph Brodsky published a new collection of poems called Urania. As a choice of the title, the poet looked toward the mythology of ancient Greece. Prior to this, the writer had more than once appealed to the ancient Greek gods for help to finish the work to the end. Most often the author cried out to Urania, which gave him the strength to finish to the end.

Also in choosing the title, Brodsky wanted to make a reference to one of his favorite poets and to the work The Last Poet. In addition to the title, references to the work of Boratynsky are also found in some of the works inside the collection.

The collection itself consists of a group of poems with the style of poetry characteristic of Joseph Brodsky, written in the time span from 1970 to 1980.
