Mrs. Ramsey wants very badly to see the lighthouse, which is not far away. She persistently asks her son James to go with her. But the father of the family, Mr. Ramsey, intervenes in the dialogue.

The Englishman begins to dissuade his wife from the walk. The British man is convinced that tomorrow the weather will be cloudy, which will not be good for the health of both family members. This kind of opinion heats up the relationship in the family.

After some time, family friends and colleagues with whom the couple Ramsey has to work come to visit the family. Among the visitors is Lily Briscoe. She is an artist, and one of her works is a portrait of Mrs. Ramsey and James on which she is now actively working. That said, the girl decided to try her hand at literature, and sat down to write a short story. Before sitting down for a literary work, the girl tormented by doubts about the productivity of this activity. And they did not let her go for a second.
