The novel is set in Ireland, in the 18th century. The main character is twenty-six-year-old Lucy Moore, a happy wife and mother, the mistress of a prosperous home. The story begins when her husband’s cousin, Anne, comes to their house. Curious Lucy learns that Anna had a child, but no one knows who the father of the child is.

Lucy’s first passion is her love for her husband Peter. But the heroine has worn out her husband with jealousy and suspicion. As a result, the man tragically dies.

Lucy’s second passion is her love for her son. After her husband’s death, all of the woman’s feelings are flooding into her son. Lucy sacrifices everything for her son, but he ends up well educated, falls in love, and marries without his mother’s permission. Proud Lucy breaks off communication with her son.

The heroine’s third passion is the love of God. Lucy enters the Order of the Servants of God. It seems to her that serving God is what she has strived for all her life. But her mentor does not like the wayward woman. In the finale, the aging and sick Lucy leaves the walls of the monastery and returns to her homeland.
