A married couple, Giles and Molly Ralston, have recently inherited the Monkswell Manor from their late Aunt Molly Catherine. The couple decided to open an inn in the house. During a snowstorm, guests gather at the inn. At this time, a murder of one Mrs. Maureen Lyon is reported on the radio. The suspect is dressed in a dark coat and scarf.

First the first four guests arrive: Christopher Wren, Major Metcalfe, Miss Caswell, and Mrs. Boyle, who annoys everyone. Later, Mr. Paravicini arrives, whose car is stuck in a snowdrift.

The police investigate another murder. A note with the word «First» is pinned to the victim’s chest and the address of the Ralston Hotel is written on it. Sergeant Trotter arrives at the inn to investigate.

Soon Miss Boyle is strangled with a scarf in the library. All the guests suspect each other. The murderer turns out to be Sergeant Trotter, who was the brother of a boy who died years ago. He tries to kill Molly, but the girl is saved by Major Metcalfe and Miss Caswell.
