A novel in the Hercule Poirot series. A strange girl comes to Poirot with a request for help — she seems to have killed someone. The detective begins his inquiries, but the girl quickly disappears. Soon the writer Ariadne Oliver suggests that it was the daughter of a millionaire, the young lady Norma Restarick. Poirot tried to find Norma, but she disappeared.

The detective is concerned about Norma’s disappearance and begins a search for her. Poirot goes to Norma’s parents, who live in a small village, but the girl is not there. Mary Restarick told about the strangeness of her stepdaughter and that Norma hates her. Later, Poirot finds Norma, who thinks she is responsible for David Baker’s death.

In the finale, Poirot discovers that Norma’s father, Andrew Restarick, is an impostor, Robert Orwell, who took his place after the real Restarick died in Africa. Mary Restarick also led a double life. Crooks killed David Baker, who blackmailed them. Poor Norma was drugged and convinced that she was the one who committed the murder.
