The Liverpool Theater Group employs Julia Lambert and Michael Gosselin. Julia wants Michael to try his hand as a theater manager. A relationship develops between the characters, Michael proposes to Julia and soon the couple is married.

During World War I, Michael serves in the army as an officer. The couple has a child, Roger, but Julia no longer loves her husband. Later, the wealthy widow begins to finance Michael as a theater manager. The man gets a small part in a play that is a success. The heroes stage several more plays, after which they rent a theater in London. Gradually to Julia comes success and wealth.

In Julia falls in love with Tom Fennel, a clerk from an accounting firm who audited the accounts of Michael’s theater. He invites the heroine to his house for tea. After this meeting, an affair begins between them, Julia buys her lover presents, and he spends two weeks at the couple’s country house. Tom gets on well with Roger, who is his age.
