Albert Wilmart, a professor of literature at the University of Miskatonic, finds notes in the newspaper that after a severe flood in Vermont, locals have seen the bodies of strange creatures like crabs in the rivers. One of the eyewitnesses to the incident, Henry Ackley, who lives on a farm in Vermont, enters into correspondence with Wilmart.

Henry tells Albert that the strange creatures are aliens from the planet Yuggot. The inhabitants of the Himalayas call them Mi-go. The aliens lead a clandestine lifestyle and observe earthlings.

Ackley soon writes that he fears for his life. He suspects that the Mi-go know that he has become aware of their secret. Ackley wants to leave, but keeps putting off leaving. Soon the letters from Ackley stop coming, and some time later Albert receives a telegram asking him to come urgently to the farm. Albert arrived at the farm and found his friend dead. There was no evidence of aliens in the house.
