In a dwelling on the road from Ghent to Saint-Pierre, a young girl named Grittier died. The latter’s mother, Rosier, refused to believe that her daughter had died, but the doctor was adamant — it was impossible to revive Grittier.

Soon the doctor left, and the mother told the maid named Siska that today it is not yet necessary to go and order a coffin. She then sat down by the bedside, took her child’s hand in the hope that he would begin to move. But it did not, and Rosier collapsed onto the body of the dead Grittier. She wept and could not calm down. The grieving mother spent more than an hour in this state.

The mother, struggling with her negative thoughts, found the strength to get up. The old woman was the owner of an inn and did not want to miss an opportunity to earn money even while she was in a difficult state of mind. Peasants began to enter the establishment, and Rosier realized that Siska was not doing a good job.
