The peasant Yegorka Basov is widowed in the middle of the harvest. Yegorka cannot make it through the harvest alone; he must immediately find a new wife.

Time is hot, all the peasants work from morning till night. And not every girl will get married in a hurry.
But still Yegorka found himself a bride. In a neighboring village he asked for a soldier’s widow, Anisya. He took a good look at his potential wife and decided he could work.

They loaded Anisya’s uncomplicated dowry onto a cart and drove over to Yegorka’s house. Suddenly the bridegroom notices that the future wife has a bad limp. A serious and unacceptable disadvantage for a worker.

With scandal and abuse, the indignant Basov finally forced the failed wife to pack her belongings. He again loaded Anisya onto a cart to take her to where he had taken her. But he didn’t, he dropped her off on the road — the harvest, every minute counted.
