The Wedding by Anton Chekhov. Short summary

A guest brings a general to the wedding, but he turns out to be a captain. The indignant hostess says that she paid for the general. The insulted military man, who did not receive any money, leaves.

At the wedding of Epaminond Aplombov and Dashenka, the groom expresses his displeasure to the bride’s mother about the dowry and the unpleasant guest. In addition, Epaminond laments that there is still no general invited.

The bride´s mother calms the bridegroom that the question will be resolved by Nunin, an insurance agent, who will find the general for 25 roubles.

Nunin brings the old general, before whom the hosts and guests flatter him. At the table the old man meets the sailor. He reminisces about the navy, shouts out commands loudly, interrupting the other guests.

The bride’s mother reprimands him. It transpires that the guest is not a general, but a captain of the second rank. The woman is indignant that she paid specifically for the general. The offended old man says he did not receive any money and leaves.

The bride’s mother asks Nyunin about the money, but he jokes it off.
