Tomasz, an independent and successful doctor, meets the young beauty Teresa. The relationship develops quickly and soon Teresa moves in with Tomasz.

The novel is set in Prague in the mid-twentieth century. The main character is a surgeon-doctor, Tomáš. He has recently met Tereza, a waitress, and is contemplating whether to continue the relationship.

And Teresa’s life before she met Tomasz was not easy. The girl’s mother, dissatisfied with her life, takes out all of her anger on her daughter. Tereza dropped out of school and went to work as a waitress. Having met a successful Tomash, she immediately agrees to live with him.

Tomash rents an apartment for Tereza and helps her get a job. However, the hero does not stop meeting other women. Tereza guessed about his cheating.

In August 1968, during the Soviet occupation, Tereza filmed what was happening with her camera and ended up in the commandant’s office. She and Tomasz had to go to Switzerland. Here Tomasz works as a surgeon and Tereza is home alone all day. The woman became jealous and returned to her homeland. After some time, Tomas follows his wife. In Prague, the heroes could not find themselves and soon moved to the countryside.
