A young schoolteacher, Nikolai Nilovich Turbin, had no money to go home for the holidays. In the fall, he sent all his savings to his father for medical treatment. The young man has been living in Mozharovka for a year, but he shuns companies and women. He once dreamed of making a model school in the village, but dreams dissipate over time.

The teacher gets acquainted with Kondrat Semenovich, the son of an impoverished nobleman and factory worker Slepushkin. Landowner Lintvarev invites Nikolai to a festive dinner. He is received warmly and introduced to the guests. As he walks around the dining room, the teacher talks to his host and the rich landowner about vocational training, but the conversation does not go well.

He feels that he is being jeered at. At dinner, Nikolai quickly becomes intoxicated. He dances wildly in the hall, and they take him home. The next day the whole village knows of the disgrace. Kondrat Semyonovich takes Turbin on a visit. At the liver’s, the young man drinks himself senseless and falls asleep. Kondrat is disappointed in his comrade.
