Twelve-year-old Jack Sawyer travels across the country with his mother, Lily, who has cancer, hiding from Uncle Morgan Sloat. At one hotel, Jack meets old man Speedy Parker, who tells the boy about another world, the Valleys. There you can be transported with a potion. Every person there has a double. Jack’s mother, in the Valleys is Queen Laura, and she, too, is dying. The Talisman can save her.

Jake sets out across America to find the Talisman. He goes to his goal, often moving between worlds and getting into adventures. The boy is pursued by Morgan Slote and his double Morgan Orris. Jake meets a werewolf named Wolf, who becomes his friend, later joined by Richard, with whom the hero has been friends since childhood.

Jake manages to get to the Black Hotel, where he finds the Talisman. With the help of the artifact, the hero helps his friends and punishes his enemies. Returning to his mother, Jake heals her, but the Talisman disappears. Queen Laura in the Valleys also recovers.
