The goddess Venus is jealous of the earthly Princess Psyche’s delightful appearance and decides to take revenge on her by making her fall in love with the worst mortal man. She entrusts her son Cupid to carry out this plan. But he himself falls in love with the Princess and they secretly marry.

Cupid only comes to his wife under cover of darkness and forbids her even to try to see him, frightening her with terrible misfortunes. But one night the enamoured Psyche enters her husband’s bedroom and sees him sleeping. Cupid is awakened by a drop of oil which has inadvertently fallen from the Princess’ lamp. Angered at his wife, he leaves her.

Psyche, unable to bear the separation from her husband, sets out in search of him and finds him with Venus. Cupid’s mother greets the Princess with profanity and asks her to perform difficult and dangerous tasks. Psyche, with the help of the other gods and nature, successfully completes them.

But Venus still does not want to recognize the mortal woman as her kinswoman. Jupiter grants Psyche immortality, and she and Cupid are reunited.
