Magda, a courtesan, throws a party in a salon in Paris. She is infatuated with her new acquaintance Ruggiero, who has come from a provincial town. The heroine is going to run away with her lover to Nice, after she leaves her wealthy patron, the banker Rambaldo.

Together with the lovers, the woman’s maid, Lisette, and her admirer, the poet Prunier, set out on the road. In Nice, the characters feel happy and have a good time at the villa by the Mediterranean Sea.

One day, Magda reads a letter from her lover’s mother. She disapproves of her son’s behavior. After this, the former courtesan decides to leave Ruggiero and return to her former patron, who has forgiven her for the betrayal.
