The Alper brothers, Leo and Osip, were Jewish. When the former Russian Empire was destroyed by revolutionary upheaval, the first left his native country with his father and ended up in Paris, while the second stayed in Kiev.

Many years passed. In the late 1930s, Leo decides to go to the USSR to visit his brother. Upon arrival at his destination, the man realized that his close relative had changed greatly and showed little desire to communicate with him because Leo was not involved in the implementation of the «five-year plan,» nor did he have information about life in the Soviet Union.

After a while, Leo returned to France. He often had to hide and be humiliated, but eventually he was caught and sent to a concentration camp. At the same time, Osip’s mother and daughter were killed by the Nazis, and he and his wife, named Raya, became active in the underground.
