Andersen’s poem describes winter bad weather. A girl sits at the window and thinks her sweetheart won’t come in this weather. But the young miller was not afraid of the blizzard. He got out to meet his sweetheart and walked through the field and forest. On the way he sang and whistled like a blizzard.

But then his way was blocked by a sleigh. A beautiful Blizzard Queen was sitting in it. She invited the boy to go with her. The lady of snow assured him that in her castle on the mountain, the roof shone like a rainbow, the bed was softer than a snowdrift, and a blizzard served as a canopy for the bed.

The blizzard raged through the night. In the morning a pale sun rose. It illuminated the snow-covered field with its timid rays. But it could not melt the ice on the eyelashes of the frozen miller.
