The head of the FBI’s criminal profiling unit assigns cadet Clarice Starling to profile the sophisticated cannibalistic maniac Lecter.

The talented girl finds an approach to the psychopath, and he begins to give her clues to the case of Buffalo Bill, a maniac who skinned women. Bill got hold of the senator’s daughter, but the FBI has no way to track him down.

The director of the clinic where Lecter is being held makes a deal with the senator and, in exchange for information about Buffalo, Lecter is transported to another city. He tricks the senator, kills the guards, and escapes.

With Lecter’s clues, Starling finds the maniac. He turns out to be a talented tailor, James Gumb, who dreams of becoming a woman. He uses the skin of his victims to make himself a special dress.

Starling kills Gumb and saves the senator’s daughter. The trail of the escaped Lecter is lost.
