Ali Banu, the richest sheikh in Alexandria, was also the most miserable man. He did not know how to enjoy his wealth and comforts, was always scowling and unsociable. Young people laugh at him. Everyone knows what a luxurious life he would have lived with that kind of money. The young men share their plans and dreams.

An old man, who overhears their conversation, reveals the nobleman’s secret. Fifteen years ago, during the war, the French kidnap his son Kairam and take him to an unknown destination. Now the sheik is always sad, and nothing in life pleases him. His wife dies of grief after losing her son. The father equips a ship and sails in search of Kairam, but returns empty-handed.

On each anniversary of his son’s abduction, he frees 12 slaves and arranges a competition between the slaves for the best story. He is foretold that someday on this day his son will return home. Ali Banu summons guests to his decorated house. Among the slaves is a handsome young man who has recently been purchased. The oldest slave begins to tell the story.
