Jerome describes the work of some of the maids. According to him, the latter are always busy. Such maids, according to the author, have a good heart, but their faces are always dirty. He compares the clothes of these women to raven scarecrows.

Jerome calls cleaning boots and cleaning furnished rooms the main duties of the aforementioned ladies. The English writer says that they look for boots all over the rooms, and when they do find them, they are ready to bring them to shine at all hours of the day.

The author believes that the maids know a special type of shoe cleaning. He writes that these ladies wash the dirt off the boots, then apply wax to them. At the end of this action they begin to put on a gloss. The English writer adds that the main characters of his work do it with the same brush.

It may even seem to some people that they are perfectionists, bringing their shoes to shine all day long. But the author states that this is not the case.
