Capricious and spoiled Mary lives in India with a wealthy British family. At the age of ten, she loses her parents and is forced to move to England to live with her birth uncle. He is a widower and longs for his wife, so he has ordered a fence around the area where the deceased was growing roses.

Mary is very interested. She dreams of finding the key and opening the gate to the garden. In the meantime, she gets used to her new life and gradually finds friends — Robin the bird, Dicken the maid’s brother and Colin the master’s sickly son. One day they do manage to break through the high fence.

In secret, they work hard, removing trash and bushes and planting flowers. Soon Mary’s soul thaws, she becomes a kind, sensitive and fair girl. Together with Dicken, they help Colin get back on his feet from his wheelchair. When Uncle Mr. Craven returns home after a long absence, he is surprised to see a fragrant garden and a healthy son.
