A novel in the Tommy and Tuppence series. Young couple Tommy Beresford and Tuppence Cowley find themselves in a tight spot—they have big money problems. The young people decide to start a business where they will offer themselves as adventurers. A certain Mr. Wittington, offers Tuppence good pay for a strange job — to go to Paris and live there in a boarding house for girls. When asked what her name is, Tuppence introduces herself as Jane Finn. Wittington changes his face and hands Tommy a large sum of money.

Tommy and Tuppence decide to follow Wittington and find out who Jane Finn is. It turns out that Jane Finn was on the wreck «Lusitania» and the courier gave her secret papers before she died.

Tommy and Tappiens begin a search for the girl. But they are not the only ones looking for Jane. After many adventures, the friends find Jane. It turns out that the girl hid the papers before she was hit over the head. The novel ends with Tommy offering Tappence his hand and heart, and Julius and Jane getting engaged.
