Arnolf wants to marry his ward, who grew up in a convent. His friend’s son falls in love with the girl. Unaware that Arnolf is her guardian, he tells him of his feelings.

Arnulf changes his name to «Mr. La Sush. The man wants to marry, but is afraid that his wife will cheat on him. Because of this, he takes his ward Agnes as his wife. The girl’s parents were peasants, and she herself grew up in a convent and never went out.

Arnolf tells his own plans to his friend, who does not like his methods of raising his future wife. The son of his other friend, Oras, falls in love with Agnes. He tells this to Arnolf, unaware that he is her guardian. Oras also ridicules the guardian who has isolated his ward from the outside world.

Arnolf urges the girl to marry. Agnes thinks it is about their marriage to Oras and agrees. But her guardian informs her that he will be her future spouse. Oras tells Arnolf of the love letter he has received from Agnes.
