In Mexico with Father Brown, a socialite, Hypatia Potter, was staying in the same hotel with him. She was rumored to be having an affair with the poet Romanes.

Journalist Rock is a stern champion of morality. He saw a quarrel between two men, a curly-haired handsome man and a bearded short man. Rock was sure that the bearded man was Hypatia’s husband.

Rock meets Father Brown, who tells him that he gave his room to Hypatia so she could elope with her lover.

A shocked Rock hurries to send the news to the newspaper. But Father Brown explains that the man Rock mistook Potter for is a poet. For the sake of popularity, Hypatia created the appearance of their affair and moved in with him.

The poet made sure that her legal spouse could not get to her. Father Brown helped Hypatia escape to her husband.

But the story of how the priest helped the lady escape with her lover, despite Rock’s denials, is still debated today.
