The creator states that once there was a lonely sail whiting in the blue sea. The poet writes about the fact that at that period of time the weather was foggy. Mikhail Yuryevich tries to find out what part of the ship he describes is trying to find in a distant country. In addition, he becomes interested in what the sail left in his native land.

Lermontov says that the waves of the sea were playing, while the wind was whistling — all this combined affected the mast, which began to bend and creak. He notes with regret that the protagonist of his work does not seek to find happiness and run away from it.

The author believes that the jet, which is lighter than the azure, is located beneath the sail, while the golden sunbeam is above that part of the ship. The rebellious sail itself, according to the artist, hopes for the arrival of the storm, as if that can bring it peace.
