The works in the collection are arranged in the order they were written. Part I includes the poet’s earliest works, which appeared during his high school and university years. The second part of the collection was written by the author in his maturity and has a more serious and philosophical orientation.

In The Stone, Mandelstam explores the themes of inspiration and the cosmos, and touches on the theory of realism and rational thought. The collection also includes poems on religious themes. They are devoted to Christianity, the attitude to death and eternal life.
