Count Belfiore, in a fit of jealousy, wounded his fiancée Violante. He thought the girl was dead. The Count was afraid he would be accused of murder and fled the scene.

Violante, together with her servant Robert, set out to find Belfiore. The heroine disguises herself as a peasant girl and is hired as a gardener by Judge Anchise. His niece had previously been courted by her former fiancé. Violante introduces herself as Sandrine. She wishes to win back her lover.

The girl is helped by a servant who has taken a job with her. The pretty gardener falls in love with the podesta. The servant, who has taken the name Nardo, falls in love with the maid Serpetta. Belfiore, seeing the imaginary gardener, recognises her to be his former bride. In spite of that, the girl convinces him that he is mistaken.

Ramiro, whom Arminda has recently rejected, brings a letter. In it the Earl is accused of murdering his bride. But an imaginary gardener proves her lover’s innocence and saves him. Thereafter, Belfiore falls in love with Violante again.
