The story is about a poet with the unusual name of Croniamantal. The reader meets his family, learns about his birth and education. Everything ends with the poet’s death.

Cronimantal’s mother died in childbirth, and his stepfather shot himself a few days after his birth because he had lost his entire fortune in cards. The boy was taken by the Dutch traveler Janssen to be raised as his own son.

Janssen gave the boy a decent education. Shortly after Cronimantal came of age, his guardian died. The young man sold his house and left for Paris, to pursue literature, as he wished.

In Paris, the young man got a job in a theater writing scripts for plays, and he excelled at it. On the stages went his plays, the crowd was greeted with applause, but at the same time the number of persecutors and haters grew.

One day a local newspaper published an article calling for «a cure for the poetic plague. Poets began to be persecuted, oppressed, and executed. The main character of the work fell into a crowd of angry residents, where he was brutally murdered.
