Liberal ideas reach northern Bohemia at the beginning of the century. The miners there go on strike, demanding that their wages be lowered, and the gendarmes raise the red flag. The defeat of the Russians at Tsushima bewildered the citizens, because deputy Klofach had previously reported only Russian victories.

Only those who were at the prayer service on the occasion of the beginning of the war believed him. Supporters and opponents of the Tsar had a scuffle on the square. A sense of dignity is awakened in Czechs: an anarchist gives away his heritage to a communist publication, another publishes a cheap newspaper for the people. A satirical magazine goes bankrupt, a democratic newspaper lies, and others forget about democracy.

Life is filled with events, from the Macedonian Revolution to the Adventist baptism of old women in a bathhouse. At this tumultuous time the author establishes a new party of moderate progress, not beyond the law. Its name is both a manifesto and a declaration of basic principles. However, circumstances soon force the founders to change their general line.
