He liked to take walks in the evening hours. One day he wandered into the City of London, immersed in his own musings. The latter were interrupted by a child’s voice — some girl asked him how she could get to a particular street. The old man was very surprised that the child was able to make it alone from a completely different part of town quite safely. Soon the protagonist decided to accompany the young lady, to which she gave her consent.

The old gentleman, upon examining the girl’s appearance, realized that she was a member of a decent family. He asked her several questions, but she was unwilling to answer them directly. The elderly man concluded that the child was characterized by simple-mindedness and told him the truth. The protagonist tried to guess who and for what purpose had sent the young lady so far away.

After some time they came to their destination. The door of the house was opened by the grandfather, who declared that he was glad to see his granddaughter Nellie.
