Arthur Gordon Pym recounts how he met Captain Barnard’s son, Augustus. He was friends with him when he was in high school. Buddy sailed with his father on the Pacific Ocean and talked about his adventures. The hero also wanted to go to sea.

When he was 18 years old, he and his buddy came up with a plan. He was to get on the ship unnoticed and show himself to Augustus’ father only a few days later, when it would no longer be possible to return.

Arthur hides in an empty crate in the hold, where a friend has prepared food, water, a candle, and a mattress for him. His friend never showed up, but that did not bother him. He fainted because of the stale air. After a while, the water and food start to run out, and the young man realizes that it has been more than a week.

Finally August arrives. He tells him that there has been a riot on the ship. His friend’s father and all those who had remained loyal to him were killed and thrown into the sea. Augustus managed to survive thanks to one of the rioters.
