Zenon Legge is a young Englishman who came to Dublin at one time to visit his own cardinal uncle. The latter, wishing to get rid of his eccentric nephew as soon as possible, instructs him to go to the Irish village of For Mile Water to find out the nature of the miracle that had recently occurred in that place.

Shortly before the journey began, his uncle read to Zeno a letter written by Hickey, a priest who lived in the village. A blacksmith who did not believe in God had passed away in For Mile Water. Despite the displeasure of the local Catholics, the atheist was buried in the cemetery by the river. The next day it was discovered that all the graves, with the exception of the blacksmith’s, had inexplicably moved to the other side of the body of water. It seemed that the deceased did not want to be near the blacksmith.

Later, the newspapers wrote that the story described was a fabrication.
