Brigadier Gerard tells an incident from his youth. The brigadier’s troops stopped in Normandy. Here he met the village beauty Marie.

The brave hussar officer eliminated all rivals and enjoyed his meetings with the girl. He loved Marie, but did not want to marry, because the life of a hussar is nothing but wars.

One day he was on his way to see the girl by a shorter route. Gerard was warned that a very aggressive bull was grazing there. But the intrepid hussar was not afraid. He saw the bull, but it did not touch the brigadier.

However, on the way back, the animal threw itself at the young man. He, forgetting his heroism, began to run as hard as he could back to Marie’s dwelling. At the very house, the bull threw the brigadier and he flew into the open window of the girl. He explained that he had returned in such an unusual way out of passion and asked for Marie’s hand.
