A story in the Hercule Poirot series. Inspector Japp offered Poirot and Hastings a weekend vacation in the village of Market Basing. But the Sunday brunch was interrupted by a local policeman who asked Japp for help. The owner of the large estate, Walter Prothero, was found dead in his room, which was locked from the inside.

Poirot and Hastings undertake to assist Japp in his investigation. Mrs. Clegg’s housekeeper called Dr. Giles when she could not get into her master’s room. The man broke down the door and found Prothero shot dead. A man named Parker was staying in the house at the time and the host did not like him. Parker was arrested for murder.

After examining the room and a little investigation, Poirot discovered that Parker was innocent. Prothero’s real last name was Wendover and he was involved in a sordid affair. Parker blackmailed Prothero and he desperately shot himself. The housekeeper, in love with her master, decided to take revenge on the blackmailer and tampered with the evidence so that Parker would be blamed for Prothero’s death.
