Irwin Shaw describes a story whose protagonist is a representative of the stronger sex, Bocherch. For the past 13 years he has been happily married to a wife named Ginette.

At one time, while on vacation, Bocherch was enjoying the scenery of the French capital and smoking a cigar at the same time. While taking a walk, the man stopped by a well-known jewelry outlet to purchase earrings for his much-loved spouse. However, he soon had to leave the store with nothing, as the pieces he wanted to buy were overpriced. Later, Bocherch bought a beautiful, yet expensive album for his wife.

After a while the main character saw Ginette walking with an unknown man on her arm and talking merrily about something. Her husband was very surprised by such a development, because the lady of his heart during the whole marriage has never once questioned her fidelity. Bocherch decided to find out what was the matter.
