The friends arrive in the village of Mountain Top, where a local resident tells them that Arthur has been living in the house of Dandy Dan. Sculptor began courting Dan’s wife, and soon the woman and Arthur disappeared.

The friends go to the mountains and find Arthur’s body in one of the caves, but it has turned into a stone statue. At Dan’s house, they find two more statues. They are Dan and his wife. On the table, the friends see a diary, from which they learn the sad story.

Dan was a sorcerer. One day he found out about his wife Rose’s love affair with a sculptor who lived in his house. Dan decided to get rid of them. Having obtained the recipe for a magic potion that turns a living organism into stone, the sorcerer set about executing his plan. He slipped the potion into Arthur’s wine and poisoned his wife’s food. Rose guessed everything and before she was completely petrified she poisoned her husband, whom she hated.
