The main character Belikov worked on the territory of the gymnasium as a teacher and believed that you should always and everywhere follow the rules. Everything changes when he falls in love with a girl named Varenka.

In the center of the storyline is a description of the life journey of a grammar school teacher named Belikov, who was a hardened ascetic and was an exceptionally correct person.

This man was constantly thinking about something and even in the period of sunny weather went for a walk in the same clothes, not forgetting to bring an umbrella.

The situation around the aforementioned representative of the stronger sex began to change for the better when Kovalenko came to work at the educational institution. The new teacher had a charming sister named Varenka, in relation to which the main character begins to experience love feelings.

All the people in town find out about Belikov’s feelings, which makes him uncomfortable.

One day he sees Varenka on a bicycle, considering it an indecent prank. The teacher tried to express his opinion to Kovalenko, but he only let him down the stairs, while Varenka laughed.

Belikov was in shock after what happened and eventually died.
