Ling was to be met by one of the directors of the syndicate company, Mr. Pearson. The Chinaman stayed at a hotel in Russell Square, but the next day the police discovered his body in the Thames.

Poirot was summoned, who immediately began an investigation. The detective discovered that a bank clerk named Charles Lester had called Wu Ling the day he disappeared.
