The novella is part of the Dark Tower series. The events in the book take place before the main action of the series. Shooter Roland is pursuing the Man in Black, Walter. Following the enemy, the gunslinger finds himself in the desolate town of Eluria. The hero’s horse is on its last gasp.

In the street, Roland sees a corpse being tormented by a wild dog with a white cross on its chest. The gunner drives the dog away and sees a gold locket on the dead man’s chest. He tries to remove the jewel, but then the hero is attacked by a pack of slow mutants.

The battered Roland wakes up in a hospital tent surrounded by nuns calling themselves the Little Sisters. But Roland soon discovers that the Sisters are actually vampires, nursing wounded travelers to drink their blood.

The golden medallion turns out to be a protection against vampires, but the gunslinger is unable to escape on his own. He is aided in his escape by his sister Jenna, who has unwillingly joined the Sisters. The main vampire, Great Sister Mary, catches up with them, but she is attacked by a stray dog with a cross on his chest.
