The novel is set in the British colony of North America in the summer of 1757. Hunter Nathaniel Bampo, nicknamed Falcon Eye, travels with his friend Chingachgook, a Mohican Indian, and his son Uncas. In the woods they meet the fort commander’s daughters, Alice and Cora, who, accompanied by Major Duncan, go to their father.

The girls are taken prisoner by an Indian guron, Magua, nicknamed the Artful Fox (he was once humiliated by the girls’ father). Magua wants to make Cora his wife, but the girl refuses. The Indian wants to execute the sisters, but Bampo and his friends manage to free them.

The sisters arrive at their father’s house, but the fort is overrun by the French and they have to leave the fort. Magua, taking advantage of the situation, kidnaps Alice and Cora again. Father and his friends rush out in search of the girls. Uncas, who is in love with Cora, manages to catch and defeat the Hurons. Realizing he has lost, Magua decides to kill Cora. Young Uncas also dies. The grief-stricken Chingachgook remains the last of the Mohican tribe.
