Schneer and Meer lived in a poor family, and their parents could barely manage to provide their children with the food they needed. The latter had maintained a friendly relationship with each other since birth, but one day their father went into the next world. After that, the brothers began to quarrel over the inheritance left by their father — one place of honor in the local synagogue grounds. Both Meir and Schneer sought to take the leadership of the inheritance.

After a while, the brothers arrive at the religious edifice and begin to fight among themselves. After calming down, the boys decide to ask the rabbi for a recommendation. He argues that the synagogue is a holy house, which is why one place can also be divided for two if desired. But in the end the protagonists decided to do something different — they left the place of honor intended for them empty and began to pray near the door of the synagogue.
